The notion is do voters get to choose their leaders, or do leaders get to choose their voters? Off-year partisan redistricting –notably in Texas and California – has been an alarming recent trend.
Gerrymandering, or blatant partisan manipulation of voting districts intended to favor one party's candidates, Redistricting has been a news topic in 2025. Gerrymandering is a persistent cancer on the body of American politics. Combined with ranked choice voting and nonpartisan primaries, independent redistricting commissions are a welcome beacon of fairness and prevent the major parties from unduly swaying the outcomes of our elections.
Since 2018, Colorado has been fortunate to have independent redistricting of congressional and state legislative districts, but we must stay vigilant to prevent reversion to partisan gerrymandering. The objective of redistricting must be to make every district in Colorado more competitive over time.
