La Plata County Commissioner (D3) (2021-2028)

Matt Salka (D) was reelected in 2024 to continue serving on the La Plata County Board of Commissioners.

Matt is a dedicated public servant with over 10 years of experience as an elected official, currently serving as the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners in La Plata County, Colorado. With a deep commitment to his community, Matt has worked tirelessly to improve infrastructure, expand broadband connectivity, and address housing and childcare challenges. He has played a key role in establishing the county’s new public health department, advancing renewable energy projects, and securing critical funding for road and bridge improvements.

Matt brings a wealth of local knowledge and leadership experience to his work. Having has served as a town trustee, mayor, and county commissioner.  He will continue his mission of supporting local families, preserving the region's heritage, and fostering a prosperous future for the county.

Matt joined the Forward Party because he believes in a pragmatic and solutions-oriented approach to governance. As a public servant with over a decade of experience, Matt has seen firsthand how rigid partisanship can stall progress on critical issues like infrastructure, housing, and public health. Throughout his career, whether as a town mayor or a county commissioner, Matt has always prioritized finding common ground to deliver real results for his community.

Matt was increasingly drawn to the Forward Party’s core values of problem-solving, local empowerment, and focusing on the future rather than partisan ideologies. He resonates strongly with the party’s emphasis on collaboration and accountability, which reflect his own leadership style in La Plata County. Matt aims to continue building bridges across political lines, ensuring that the needs of his community come first.
