Ten Things to be Thankful For in Our Government

Listing things to be thankful for this year? Here are ten attributes of a democratic republic that CO FWD is working to preserve.

Happy Thanksgiving from CO FWD!

Here are ten characteristics of a democratic republic to be thankful for. These are features in our government that CO FWD is working to preserve.

1. Power Comes from the People

Power ultimately comes from the people. Citizens choose leaders and can remove them, ensuring government legitimacy.

2. Protection of Individual Rights

Constitutions and laws safeguard freedoms—speech, religion, assembly, due process—regardless of who holds political power.

3. Rule of Law

Everyone, including elected leaders, is bound by law. This prevents arbitrary government action and protects against tyranny.

4. Separation of Powers

Legislative, executive, and judicial branches each have defined powers. This structure prevents concentration of power.

5. Checks and Balances

Each branch can limit the other branches. Oversight, judicial review, and veto powers help maintain balance and accountability.

6. Regular, Free, and Fair Elections

Routine elections allow peaceful transitions of power and ensure leaders remain accountable to voters.

7. Representation

Citizens elect representatives who can dedicate the time and expertise to govern thoughtfully, while still being answerable to the electorate.

8. Minority Rights Protection

A democratic republic avoids both tyranny of the majority and tyranny of the minority by embedding protections for groups that are politically or numerically smaller.

9. Civic Participation and Pluralism

People can engage in politics, join parties, advocate for issues, and form organizations—leading to a diverse public sphere.

10. Stability with Flexibility

Constitutional frameworks provide stability, while democratic processes allow systems to adapt to new challenges through amendments, legislation, and public input.

This year we are especially thankful for those stepping up to help strengthen our government.

CO FWD is part of the national Forward Party. We are a few years in and are now an official political party in Colorado. We promote candidates of any party that align with our values to adhere to the rule of law, work to empower voters, and practice respectful dialogue.

Please consider working with us.

There are several ways you can show your solidarity:

  • CO FWD is an all volunteer effort. Yet our efforts –such as this maintaining this webpage –do cost money. Consider making a contribution, no matter how small, to show your solidarity.
  • You can view/sign our pledge here.
  • You can also affiliate with us (just like you would the Democrat or Republican parties).
